Rock Island

Music Festival - Credit IW County Press

The greatest rock and roll band in the world - The Rolling Stones - have confirmed that they will be appearing at the Isle of Wight Festival on Sunday 10th June - Tickets are now sold out.

This will be the Stones very first UK festival since appearing at Knebworth in 1976, and follows months of speculation that the legendary rockers would be headlining at the festival.

Mick Jagger, who together with Keith Richards, have penned some of the most famous rock songs including Satisfaction, Jumpin Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Woman and Brown Sugar, said "Festivals have changed a lot over the years, I don't know about the IW Festival or what to expect".

"I am looking forward to it".

The Stones already have links with the Island appearing twice at Ryde Pavilion in 1964 and last year, guitarist Ronnie Wood's artwork was exhibited at Dimbola Lodge Photographic Museum, Freshwater Bay.

This is not the first time that the IW Festival has attracted some of the worlds biggest rock bands and solo artists - including The Who and David Bowie in 2004, REM in 2005 and Coldplay in 2006.

ROCK ISLAND

From the iconic pop festivals of the late 60's and 1970 when Jimi Hendrix played to an audience of 600,000 people, to the revival rock festival in 2002, the Isle of Wight packs a mighty punch when it comes to hosting major music festivals.

Isle of Wight Festival

Isle of Wight FestivalThe Isle of Wight Festivals have a legendary status, with those held between 1968 and 1970 being acknowledged as Europe's equivalent to Woodstock. In 1970 Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Joni Mitchell, Free, Leonard Cohen, Joan Baez and the Moody Blues, amongst others, played to over 600,000 people, the climax of a 5 day music extravaganza attracting an audience and artists from all over the world. Unfortunately, the impact on the island was so great that Parliament passed the Isle of Wight Act banning gatherings of over 5000 people until 2002 when the Festival was re-established and has quickly become a must-see event. A more modest audience of up to 50,000 has since enjoyed headline acts such as the Who, David Bowie, REM and Coldplay.

Now in its 6th year the Isle of Wight Festival 07, taking place on 8th, 9th, 10th June at Seaclose Park, will play host to a spectacular line up, bringing together some of the finest live acts around.

The Isle of Wight Pop Festivals Past and Present at Dimbola Lodge

Jimi Hendrix at Dimbola LodgeThis unique exhibition includes rare posters, programmes, press cuttings, tickets, related memorabilia and photographs and features multi-media recreations of the music and the crowds of the iconic Isle of Wight Festival. The original festival ran between 1968 and 1970 and attracted performers such as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, the Doors, the Who and Jimi Hendrix. A life-sized bronze statue of the legendary rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix, sculpted by John Swindells, is now in situ in the specially prepared section of the gardens at Dimbola Lodge.
Jimi performed at the world famous 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, held at Afton Down, just down the road from Dimbola Lodge, and attended by over 600,000 people. It was to be Hendrix's last performance in the UK - he died a month later. The Festival was resurrected in 2002 and is now one of the most popular music events in Europe. Visit www.dimbola.co.uk
